China's first asparagus hybrid male hybrid clone "King Lulu No. 4" has recently been successfully cultivated at the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences. The identification team composed of five experts including the chief expert of the seed management of the Ministry of Agriculture organized by the Beijing Seed Management Station, the vegetable expert of the China Agricultural University, and the Vegetable Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences identified the growth of “Beijing Lulu No. 4†in the field. The purity of male cultivars was observed in the tissue culture room in the whole process of parental proliferation, rooting, and propagation, and hearings were reported on the breeder selection process. After discussion, unanimously passed the appraisal opinion and gave a higher evaluation.
Asparagus's all-male breeding period is long and difficult, and so far only a few developed countries have been able to breed all-male asparagus hybrids. According to reports, the "Beijing Lulu No. 4" cultivated by the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences is the first assortment of asparagus hybrids that have passed the provincial and municipal level certification.
