US researchers say they found that heavy metal gallium is expected to be used to develop new antibiotics against the "superbug" of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause infections such as the lungs, urinary tract, and wounds. Patients such as cancer and AIDS are susceptible to this bacterium due to their ability to resist infection. Finding new antibiotics against this "superbug" has always been the goal of researchers.

Researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine published a paper in a new issue of the journal Science and Translational Medicine. Iron is the key nutrient required for P. aeruginosa infection, and gallium is structurally similar to iron. metal. They found that gallium would "cheat" Pseudomonas aeruginosa to mistake it for iron. But in fact, once "ingestion" of gallium, the mechanism by which Pseudomonas aeruginosa synthesizes new DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is destroyed, resulting in the inability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to proliferate.

Laboratory studies have shown that although Pseudomonas aeruginosa also develops resistance to gallium, the rate of resistance is much slower. In addition, if gallium is used in combination with some existing antibiotics, it can enhance the efficacy. Mouse experiments have shown that a single dose can cure a fatal lung infection.

In addition, the researchers conducted a phase 1 clinical trial of 20 patients with cystic fibrosis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced refractory lung infections, showing that gallium improves patient lung infections and is safe.
