Chinese scientists have newly discovered six leprosy susceptibility genes

So far, Chinese scientists have discovered 18 leprosy susceptible genes.
This research was led by Zhang Furen, a researcher at the Shandong Institute of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, and completed six years at home and abroad with Harvard Medical School, Cambridge Brod College, and Anhui Medical University. This original achievement was published online in the international academic journal Nature Genetics on the 3rd.
It is understood that based on the 18 susceptible gene loci that have been located, the Zhang Furen team has constructed a risk prediction model for the onset of leprosy. The sensitivity and specificity of this model are more than 75%. In 2014, the research team selected 10 prevailing prefectures and cities in Shandong, and established a field cohort for the clinical efficacy testing of leprosy risk models including 2000 cases of leprosy and 10,000 close contacts. In 2015, this work will continue in 10 other counties and cities.
“The construction of the risk model and the establishment of the on-site cohort have made it possible to diagnose the pre-symptomatic symptoms of leprosy, and also take the first step in turning scientific discoveries into practical technologies.†Executive Vice President of STD and Leprosy Control Center, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Zhang Guocheng said.
According to reports, in addition to the discovery of six new leprosy susceptibility genes, the study also revealed the multivalent effects of these loci in infectious diseases and immune/inflammatory diseases, and found endogenous infections in these two A similar role is played in the initiation of disease-like recognition, but the subsequent immune response is diametrically opposed.
