Clinical medical research confirms that stem cells are safe and effective in treating arthritis
"Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine" published a new study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of new drugs composed of allogeneic umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells to promote articular cartilage regeneration. They selected patients with Kellgren-Lawrence grade 3 osteoarthritis and ICRS grade 4 cartilage defects, and applied a complex of allogeneic umbilical cord stem cells and hyaluronic acid hydrogel to their lesions. During a 7-year follow-up, they assessed safety, VAS (visual analog scale) scores, international joint literature committee supervisory scores, MRI results, and histological evaluation. The results showed that among the 7 patients enrolled in the study, mature repaired tissue was observed at 12 weeks of arthroscopy, and VAS and IKDC scores were improved at 24 weeks. At 7 years of follow-up, the clinical improvement was stable. One-year histological examination revealed the formation of hyaline cartilage, and the third year of MRI showed persistent regenerated cartilage. Only 5 mild central treatment-emergency adverse events were observed. There were no cases of bone formation or tumorigenesis within 7 years. The application of the novel stem cell-based pharmaceutical product is safe and effective for the regeneration of osteoarthritic cartilage.
Articular cartilage has a very limited ability to self-regenerate. At present, cartilage defects in patients with osteoarthritis are mainly palliative, including drugs and improving activity. The micro-crack technique is suitable for the repair of small and medium-sized cartilage defects in osteoarthritis, but the results are not ideal, and the cartilage tends to deteriorate in a few years. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) for osteoarthritis knees are not recommended for use in elderly patients because cellular senescence and autologous chondrocyte differentiation are accelerated during culture amplification. The treatment of cartilage defects in patients with osteoarthritis is in urgent need of a new treatment.
