The Jupiter Medical Center in Florida is a non-profit community medical center with 327 beds. The center recently said that it plans to introduce IBM's cognitive computing system, IBM Watson (hereinafter referred to as Watson) for cancer treatment. Jupiter Medical Center is the first regional hospital in the United States to use Watson technology, with the goal of helping doctors implement personalized, evidence-based cancer treatment.
AI cancer treatment first applied to community hospitals
According to the American Cancer Society, the United States will add 1.7 million cancer cases this year. In Florida alone, this number will reach 125,000. Watson in cancer treatment is designed to help the population of cancer patients exploding.
Watson's artificial intelligence technology can improve oncologists' assessment of medical literature, quickly capture medical records, and help provide oncologists with evidence-based treatment options. Watson has so far studied more than 300 journals, more than 200 textbooks, and nearly 15 million pages of literature to advise doctors on different methods, medicines, and practices. Watson also grades recommendations based on efficacy to complement peer-reviewed research and clinical trials.
“At Jupiter Medical Center, we are committed to exploring new ways in pharmacy and health care.†John D. Couris, Chairman and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center, said: “Watson in cancer treatment constitutes our world-class cancer research project. Part of it. We are honored to be the first community hospital in the United States to adopt such advanced technology."
Rob Merkel, vice president of the IBM Watson Health Center for Oncology and Genomics, believes that "global and nationwide communities increasingly need to improve efficiency and quickly access important information from the vast array of cancer research."
"We are shocked by Watson's extraordinary reasoning and ability to provide treatment advice. This ability allows doctors to tailor a personalized treatment for patients," said Abraham Schwarzberg, general manager of cancer treatment at Jupiter Medical Center. Not only that, but Watson can also help the Jupiter Medical Center's interdisciplinary team dedicated to cancer treatment to clarify individual contributions.
Watson's cancer applications in the global arena
Watson's application in the field of cancer has gradually spread from the United States to many countries around the world.
In terms of technological development, the US top-level cancer center MSK (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) has fully used Watson as an auxiliary means to analyze the patient's personal condition and diagnosis results. IBM and MSK are promoting Watson in training cancer therapy to provide clinicians with treatment options for breast, lung, rectal, cervical, ovarian and gastric cancer. In 2017, Watson will expand to nine other cancers, covering 80% of cancer cases worldwide.
At the University of North Carolina, researchers at the Lineberger Cancer Center are also working with Watson to help patients with advanced cancer choose new treatments that are more effective. By analyzing complex genetic data and the latest research, Watson helps doctors discover treatment options that might have been missed.
Outside the United States, IBM Watson has collaborated with the University of Tokyo Medical School to make a difference in the treatment of leukemia. Watson read and analyzed 20 million medical literature, papers, and pathology in 10 minutes, helping a 66-year-old female leukemia patient admitted to the school to find a genetic mutation and find an effective treatment. The patient is currently recovering. In Australia, IBM and Melanoma Institute Australia conduct research projects that use AI technology to enhance the recognition of melanoma.
In addition, IBM has cooperated with several well-known pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and AstraZeneca in the field of oncology. For example, Pfizer's Oncology Institute uses Watson for Drug Discovery to analyze a large number of different data sources and discover new indications for drug targets and alternative drugs. Watson for Drug Discovery has ingested 25 million Medline abstracts, more than 1 million medical journal articles, and 4 million patent articles.
