Stem cell transplantation can prevent multiple sclerosis

Release date: 2017-03-31

The latest study provides further evidence for autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for multiple sclerosis, based on a five-year follow-up study of stem cell transplantation in patients. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, and its pathogenesis is related to multiple factors such as immunity and genetics. At present, the clinic mainly uses traditional drugs such as hormones and immunosuppressive drugs, but it can only alleviate the disease to some extent. Recent studies have shown that stem cell transplantation can improve the clinical symptoms of multiple sclerosis animal models, inhibit inflammatory cell infiltration, reduce axonal injury and demyelination, and may become a new method for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Autologous stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is one of the patient's own stem cell collection. The patient then receives high dose chemotherapy to eliminate any diseased cells. Next, the harvested stem cells are returned to the patient's blood in order to restart the production of normal blood cells. Simply put, autologous stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) "resets" the immune system.

46% of patients with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have no multiple sclerosis for 5 years

In the study, the researchers evaluated 25 treatment centers from 13 countries and evaluated 281 patients with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with multiple sclerosis during the period 1995-2006. Of these patients, 78% had a progressive form of multiple sclerosis.

Using the Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS), the team evaluated progression-free survival and improvement in multiple sclerosis symptoms 5 years after treatment. Overall, the researchers found that 46% of patients had no progression of sclerosing disease within 5 years of treatment.

The characteristic episode of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, followed by remission, the best, 73% is asymptomatic after 5 years of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In addition, patients improved the symptoms of multiple sclerosis after transplantation, and the EDSS score increased by 0.14 in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis. After one year of treatment, the EDSS score experienced by patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis increased by 0.76.

Treatment "has a low risk of death"

In this study, autologous stem cell transplantation involves chemotherapy, which can severely weaken the immune system and increase the susceptibility to infection. And the largest long-term follow-up study in this process can only temporarily prove that the disease can be 'frozen' to prevent it from getting worse, this period of up to 5 years. Of course, the risk of treatment must also be considered. The next step in the study is to require a large randomized controlled trial and effective treatment conditions.
