Release date: 2014-08-14
Apple is in discussions with several healthcare providers and medical record systems companies to collaborate on the upcoming Healthkit platform.
Healthkit will be released with iOS 8 this fall. The goal of the platform is to become the user's personal health data hub. According to sources, the current negotiations with Apple include Mount Sinai Hospital, Cleveland Medical Center, Johns Hopkins University, and medical record providers Allscripts and Epic Systems.
Apple has said that Healthkit will be a framework open to third parties, providing data storage and aggregation services. Users will be able to access this data through a related application, Health. Apple hopes that HealthKit will be the backbone of the information collected by third-party medical applications and hardware.
It is currently known that Apple is working with Mayo Clinic, Nike and Epic. According to sources, many other industry companies also want to link services to iOS-based platforms.
Sources say that because such collaboration will involve very sensitive medical records and data, Apple needs to ensure the privacy of the data, and Apple is trying to address regulatory barriers.
For example, Apple Developer Relations is working with application developers such as iHealth Labs. iHealth has developed a number of specialized sports tracking and fitness applications. Jim Taschetta, the company's chief marketing officer, said that for HealthKit, user privacy issues are the most important. He believes that users may be able to choose through a switch whether they want third-party applications or healthcare providers to share sensitive data with HealthKit.
Regarding HealthKit's technology, an Apple employee said that the company plans to use iCloud for data storage. The Apple employee told Reuters that the data transfer between HealthKit and the Apple server will be fully encrypted. In the future, HealthKit's backend will ensure that service providers are responsible for patient privacy, not Apple.
In addition, in order to promote HealthKit, Apple has hired or consulted some medical experts and legal experts to study data privacy policies and regulatory policies of government departments. In June of this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that it had discussed "mobile medical applications" with Apple through several meetings, but the FDA did not disclose specific details.
The FDA said at the time: "In the future product development process, Apple will work closely with the FDA. If the product must be subject to regulatory approval, then the FDA's earlier involvement and advice will help reduce Apple's unexpected situation when new products are released. ,"
Earlier this year, there were reports that Apple executives had met with FDA officials on similar issues. With powerful data sharing and collection capabilities, HealthKit is entering a market that has not yet been developed. Therefore, such products may conflict with current privacy laws. But Apple is trying to avoid this happening.
