With artificial intelligence technology, Japanese researchers have developed a new method for rapid diagnosis of skin cancer, which can immediately determine whether or not cancer is caused by skin photos, with an accuracy rate of up to 90%.
"Nikkei Business News" reported on July 26 that the study was completed by Kyocera and the University of Tsukuba. The researchers collected 4,000 images related to skin lesions, allowing the artificial intelligence system to master skin cancer features through deep learning. When using, the doctor only needs to upload a photo of the skin, and the system can automatically determine whether it is cancerous.
According to the researchers, artificial intelligence systems can initially diagnose skin cancer with photos alone, helping early diagnosis of cancer. This technology is especially suitable for off-site diagnosis and provides assistance to residents in areas where there is a shortage of specialist doctors. Kyocera plans to sell related diagnostic equipment to hospitals in 2019.
The application of artificial intelligence technology in the medical field is expanding. Many research institutes in Japan, as well as companies such as Hitachi and Olympus are actively using artificial intelligence to develop new technologies for disease diagnosis. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have used the Watson artificial intelligence system developed by International Business Machines Corporation to diagnose a type of leukemia that is difficult to judge. The diagnosis process takes only 10 minutes.
