It is reported that Microsoft's next-generation Kinect somatosensory controller will be able to detect and monitor the human heart rate at a distance of 4 feet (1.2 meters), even without the need to touch the Kinect controller.
When the blood flows through the body, the skin color changes slightly, and the new generation Kinect will detect this change to determine the speed of blood flow. Kinect will then be able to calculate the heart rate based on this speed.
This feature can be integrated into fitness applications to monitor user heart rate during exercise. In addition, when the user watches a horror movie, this can also monitor heart rate changes to reflect the degree of fright.
Microsoft said in June that XboxOne will be equipped with Kinect by default. Both the XboxOne and the new Kinect will be available for sale on November 22. In addition to monitoring heart rate, the new generation Kinect also enhances the "visible range", which is 60% wider than the current generation. This means that Kinect can track small movements in the palm of your hand.
The new generation Kinect also tracks the user's face, including eye movements and expressions. However, in the current test, the detectable expressions only included pleasure, ordinary and uninteresting.
It is also reported that due to the use of "active infrared" technology, the new generation Kinect is better able to detect human motion in dark and under-light environments. Infrared technology was previously used in night vision equipment.
Other improvements to the new generation of Kinect include the ability to point out to the user of the fitness application which muscle is currently being used and tell the boxing application how much punching the user is. Normally, the tighter the muscles, the darker the Kinect will show: the tense muscles are red and the relaxed muscles are green.
