A new study from the National Eye Institute of the United States says it can better use the induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) to grow retinal pigment epithelial cells, thereby improving stem cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration, which is expected to bring light to some blind people in the future.
Age-related macular degeneration is a common age-related eye disease. The early symptoms are visual loss. In the late stage, dark spots appear in the center of the visual field, blurred vision, and severe blindness. It is the main cause of irreversible visual impairment in the elderly. one of the reasons.
In healthy human eyes, retinal pigment epithelial cells maintain the renewal and regeneration of photoreceptors, and photoreceptors convert light into electrical signals recognizable by the brain. In patients with age-related macular degeneration, the function of the retinal pigment epithelial cells is degraded, leading to photoreceptor degeneration, which leads to visual deterioration or even blindness.
The project's lead researcher, Kapil Badi, said they found a good way to regenerate and regenerate retinal pigment epithelial cells. Previously, researchers have tried to culture iPS cells with blood cells from patients, and then the obtained iPS cells were cultured into retinal pigment epithelial cells and transplanted to patients, but the resulting retinal pigment epithelial cell maturation rate has always been low.
The team led by Buddy found that the addition of two drugs that promote the growth of primary cilia in the retinal pigment epithelial cells during the incubation process can significantly increase the maturation rate of retinal pigment epithelial cells.
Related papers were published in the American Journal of Cell Reports on January 2nd. The research team plans to promote the use of retinal pigment epithelial cell transplantation for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration in 2018.
