[Viewpoint] Sino-US precision medical treatment is not "one thing"

" Precise medical care " continues to cause shocks in the global medical and scientific communities. According to China's "13th Five-Year Plan", China will launch a "precision medical key science and technology research and development plan", which aims to apply the results of the demonstration center to clinical practice.

Professor Lang Jinyi, dean of the Sichuan Cancer Hospital and director of the Provincial Medical Class A Key Discipline Radiation Oncology Center, believes that there is a big gap between the medical and scientific circles in China and the above goals.

From May 22nd to 27th, 2016, Harvard University held the “Global Precision Medical Management” continuing education program (Workshop). Experts from various fields in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Xiamen and Nanjing went to the United States to meet face-to-face with Harvard experts.

Professor Lang Jinyi, Dean of Sichuan Cancer Hospital, was invited to participate in the training. His biggest feeling is: "China's precision medicine is too general. What we are doing now is the routine that the United States has reflected and abandoned 30 years ago."

China always does "precise medical care" on animals.

There are three main keywords in the US version of "Precision Medicine", namely gene sequencing , tumor, and personalization. The State of the Union address says: "We have 'typed our genetic code' with cancer and become a viable standard. We decide that the dose of the drug will be as convenient as measuring our body temperature - this is the precision medical treatment for us. Hope coming."

Professor Lang Jinyi feels that compared with the United States, the application fields and development routes of China's "precise medical care" are not satisfactory.

First, the application field is generalized.

In the State of the Union address, Obama cited three examples, including: 1. Cancer, listed as "the most important"; 2. Rare diseases, taking the highest incidence of vesicle fibrosis in the European descent; 3. Diabetes, As an example of a common complex disease.

Professor Lang Jinyi pointed out that "precise medicine" is based on the breakthrough of molecular biology and is mainly applied to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases with genetic information changes. After the publication of the whole gene sequencing, it has indeed solved the treatment of many rare diseases. Sequencing allows the medical community to find rare genetic mutation targets to develop drugs and predict when they will work. Taking lung cancer as an example, the discovery of EGFR and ALK genes, as well as the discovery of therapeutic methods for genes and their rapid clinical application, are the "outcomes" of precision medicine.

These clearly remind us that “precise medicine” does not apply to all diseases. “China is the second largest SCI publishing country in the world, but there are not many influential articles published in the field of 'precise medical care.” There are only a few major publications published in journals such as SCIENCE, which focus on rare diseases.
