British doctors extract stem cells from fat and recreate ears

Release date: 2014-03-10

Sina Technology News Beijing time on March 10th news, according to foreign media reports, the University of London, Great Ormond Street Hospital doctors are working to extract stem cells in fat to carry out the reconstruction of human facial organs. The research team has generated cartilage tissue in the laboratory and believes it can be used to recreate the ear, nose and other parts. The results of this research are published in the journal Nanomedicine.
Researchers say the technology will be a revolutionary treatment. Industry experts believe that the technology still has a long way to go, but it has great potential. Researchers hope to treat diseases such as congenital microtia by this method. The current treatment for small ear malformation is to cut the cartilage on the child's ribs and then cause the shape of the normal auricle. Such treatment requires multiple operations and will leave permanent scars on the child's chest and the costal cartilage will not fully recover.
In the study, the doctor took a small piece of fat from the child and extracted stem cells from it for cultivation. An auricle-shaped "scaffolding" is placed in the culture medium of the stem cells so that the stem cells grow in the shape and structure desired. The chemical components added to the culture medium promote the conversion of stem cells into chondrocytes. These chondrocytes can be implanted under the skin of a child and become new ears. At present, researchers have successfully cultured cartilage tissue, but they have to undergo safety tests before they can be used on patients.
Researcher Dr. Patrizia Ferretti said: "It is very exciting to obtain cells that are not derived from tumors. These cells are used in the same patient, so there is no problem with immunosuppression. We hope to complete the whole process in one operation, which will greatly reduce the pressure on the child, and such a structure is also promising to continue to grow as the child grows."
For this study, Professor Martin Bochar, a surgeon at University College London, pointed out that stem cells extracted from fat also require more safety testing. He said: "The reason why we use bone marrow stem cells is because more than 10,000 people have successfully transplanted bone marrow. Adipose stem cells may also be safe, but its safety record is still insufficient." (Ren Tian)
