Check for water shortages at any time? Take a look at this smart watch

Release date: 2015-09-08

In the next season's rugby match, athletes may use sweat monitoring equipment. At this time next year, you may see the first product at Monday Night Football (a US football game).

The Michigan startup Halo Wearables has just completed the prototype design, which detects the lack of water in the athlete's body. Company partner Trevor Calero said that many people have shown interest in this device.

Last year, Calero and 12 college athletes communicated with nearly half of the members of the American Football League. These athletes usually only analyze their water shortages through urine testing. Calero said: "After the day's exercise, they know that they are short of water, but the problem is that athletes do not have the tools to detect the degree of water shortage. In the detection of water shortage, it seems that it is still in the initial stage."

The company's sweat testing device is a smart watch with a rubber wristband. The back of the watch is in contact with the skin and has two electromagnetic pads and sensors that emit electrical pulses. The optical sensor can detect the sodium and potassium content in the user's plasma, the temperature detector can detect the skin temperature, and there is also an air temperature and humidity detector.

There are three indexes for the entire device: green, yellow and red. Green indicates sufficient water, yellow indicates that water should be added, and red indicates water shortage. Water should be replenished immediately.

Calero said: "There are some athletes who don't drink water the day before the game because they don't want to go to the toilet during the game. If the contestants don't drink water for 24 hours, will their performance be good? Is it safe? If it is summer, If you don't drink water in Louisiana for two days, you will die of heatstroke."

Although the company has yet to find a formal partner, Calero and his partner's father visited the University of Michigan, the University of Texas, the University of Florida athletes, coaches and other trainers who needed water monitoring. Calero said: "We have considered a lot of feedback when designing this device. For example, in extreme sports, if the athletes are seriously short of water, their coaches can get an alarm and take the athlete away."

Through water scarcity analysis, you can know the level of interstitial fluid and the ratio of sodium to potassium. You can also know the reaction of the human body when drinking water, the speed of dehydration of athletes, and under what circumstances it will dehydrate.

Calero hopes to use a lot of data to create a water deficit curve for each athlete, which also includes the rate of sweating and the impact of sweating rate on athletes. Each person's physical condition is different, so the rate of replenishment is different. We may know that an athlete adds 5 ounces of water every 15 minutes, and the other athletes have different frequencies. There are still many places that can be analyzed.

Calero plans to work with the third-party testing organization The Korey Stringer Institute. The organization was formed after the death of the Viking maintenance worker Korey Stringer in Minnesota.

Calero hopes to design more intimate products, such as chest straps and spandex shirts, by December of this year.
