Implantation of an infrared bionic vision system allows blind people to recover

Release date: 2015-05-05

The technology that allows glasses to help the blind to see the world has taken a step toward reality. The technology is based on "neuromodulation" technology, a neurological technique that uses electrical stimulation to restore vision.

This revolutionary system is being commercialized by the French company Pixium Vision and is expected to undergo clinical trials in 2016.

At present, retinal transplantation has enabled blind people to restore their vision, but the quality of transplantation in actual work is often not good.

Pixium Vision's solution claims to restore the mouse's vision to a level of 20/250. This is equivalent to allowing the wearer to see the largest line of the alphabet in the eyesight test.

The company said that their final product will restore vision to 20/120, which will be a big leap in blind vision. Second-year FDA-approved Second Sight products currently only provide 20/1300 vision to patients.

To use this device, the surgeon must first implant a small chip containing 150 electrodes in the retina. When the patient wears the system's black glasses, the integrated video camera sends the image to the laptop. The connected "pocket processor" converts the code into an infrared image that is illuminated into the eye through the glasses. The light pulse activates the electrode on the implant, which transmits the image to the brain.

After the operation, the patient is also trained to have their brain interpret new images, which are black and white. A small cohort study is already under way and has achieved promising results.

The system's new clinical trial will have an Australian bionic vision implementation next year. The system includes an estimated cost of surgery at €100,000.
